These trains will be used on the Trønder Line and replace the old Type 92 diesel trains which are now more than 30 years old. The trains will run on electricity where power is available, while using diesel on those parts of the line where there is no electricity.

- This is good for the climate and delivers enhanced comfort for travellers. Additionally, passenger capacity on these new trains is almost doubled. Travelling by train in Trøndelag will now be transformed into a completely new experience, says Øystein Risan, CEO of Norske Tog.

Zero emissions in the long term

There are still a number of train lines in Norway that have not been electrified and, for these lines hybrid trains represent an important first step towards a zero emissions future. The new trains will help to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger by up to 30 per cent.

- As and when the lines are electrified, the trains will be able to run electrically to a greater extent. Over time, trains may be overhauled to allow for pure electric operations or battery operations. This will reduce emissions to zero, which of course is the goal in the long term, says Risan.

15 years of close cooperation

Swiss train manufacturer Stadler has been responsible for the delivery of the new hybrid trains. The contract for the acquisition of the trainsets was signed in 2008 and Norske Tog took it over when the company was established.

- We have been in close cooperation since the very beginning. Stadler has delivered everything as expected - both on time and on budget. The trains are popular with passengers, staff and operators, says Risan.

In total, Stadler will have delivered 150 FLIRT trains to Norway by 2022.
