Norway will not deliver trains to Ukraine
Since 2023, Norway has been in dialogue with the Ukrainian authorities about donating Norwegian train sets to Ukraine. Before the summer, the Ukrainian authorities reported that it is not practically feasible to accept the trains. The Norwegian authorities have therefore decided to end the donation.
Following an agreement with the Ukrainian authorities, four train sets were ready for delivery to Ukraine this spring. By then, Ukrainian personnel had also been trained in driving and maintaining the trains in Norway.
Along with 35 other countries, Norway is contributing goods through the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). The scheme is an important supplement to the humanitarian aid, and mainly serves as a channel for goods assistance as requested by the Ukrainian authorities. Norway has so far contributed more than 5,400 tons of material and equipment to Ukraine since 2022.
Norway will discuss the matter with the EU Emergency Response Coordination Center (ERCC), which has the coordinating responsibility for donations of goods through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). The aim is to reduce the risk of similar incidents happening again.
Investigating interest in other European countries
As the trains will not be sent to Ukraine after all, Norwegian authorities are investigating whether there is interest in selling the trains at market price, so that the upgraded train sets can be put to use.
